The WNBA season kicks off in an electrifying fashion on Tuesday night. Not only does the league open its doors to another season, but it also welcomes its latest burgeoning star, Caitlin Clark. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 Draft will make her highly anticipated debut as the Indiana Fever travel to Uncasville, Connecticut, to take on the Connecticut Sun.

The Fever are looking to improve on their 13-27 record from last season, a campaign that saw them grab last season’s top overall pick and the 2023 Rookie of the Year, Aliyah Boston. The addition of Clark, a spectacular talent from Iowa, is expected to bolster their already young and dynamic roster. However, the team faces an uphill battle with essentially a one-week training camp and just two preseason games to their credit. It’s been little more than five weeks since Clark’s appearance in the NCAA championship game, so on-the-fly adjustments are inevitable. Yet, Clark remains optimistic and excited about her pro debut.

“This is what you work for and dream of,” said Clark. “Now you get to put your jersey on for the first real time and go out there and play. I think more than anything, just soak up the moment. We get to play on the biggest stage. There are going to be lots of people there. It’s going to be loud. But you only play your first WNBA game once.”

Clark left an indelible mark on college basketball during her four years at Iowa. She became the all-time leading scorer in NCAA Division I basketball history — across both men’s and women’s divisions — amassing 3,951 points. During her senior year, she led the nation by averaging 31.6 points per game and recorded 346 assists, steering Iowa to back-to-back national championship appearances.

Their opponents, the Connecticut Sun, are no slouches. They finished last season with a 27-13 record, marking them as the third-best team in the league. The Sun put up a valiant fight against the New York Liberty in the semifinals of the playoffs. Bolstered by 10-year veteran forward Alyssa Thomas, who was a runner-up for both MVP and Defensive Player of the Year, the Sun are ranked fourth in CBS Sports’ preseason WNBA Power Rankings. Thomas, ranked third in Jack Maloney’s WNBA Top 25 players, is one of three Sun players on the prestigious list.

The Sun have been perennial contenders since 2019, consistently making the playoffs and often vying for the championship. They won the Eastern Conference in 2021 but fell short in the semifinals against the Chicago Sky. The following year, they got past the Sky to reach the WNBA Finals but were ultimately defeated by the Las Vegas Aces. As they prepare to embark on another journey toward the championship, the Sun aim to start strong against the Fever on Tuesday night.

If you’re eager to watch this highly anticipated matchup, here’s what you need to know:

In their preseason outings, the Fever showed flashes of potential. They lost their first game 79-76 to the Dallas Wings on May 3. Clark shone in her debut against professional competition, scoring 21 points on 6-of-15 shooting, including five 3-pointers. However, adjusting to the professional level is an ongoing process, as highlighted by Clark’s performance in their next game. The Fever earned an 83-80 victory over the Atlanta Dream on May 9, but Clark had a more subdued game, hitting just 4 of 12 shots, including 2 of 9 from beyond the arc. She still managed to contribute 12 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. Despite her lower shooting percentages, Clark recognizes the importance of adaptation and improvement.

“I don’t think I was that effective, honestly,” Clark admitted. “I thought more than anything I did a really good job of passing the ball, finding my teammates. Obviously, I would have liked to have made a couple more threes, but sometimes that’s how you shoot it.”

Turnovers remain an area of concern, as Clark recorded a total of 11 across the two preseason games. Keeping that in check will be crucial for her and the Fever as they face a tough Connecticut Sun team.
